 The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at UC San Diego (hwsph.ucsd.edu) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and invites applications for one or more faculty positions in the areas of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Climate & Environmental Health, Community Health Services and Preventive Medicine, Epidemiology, Global Health, Health Behavior, Health Equity and Justice, Health Policy, Public Mental Health, and Technology & Precision Health.

The HWSPH offers teaching and student mentoring opportunities in our BS in Public Health, MPH, PhD in Public Health (administered jointly with SDSU), and MS and PhD in Biostatistics degree programs. Further, the School has a Preventive Medicine Residency program. The School has extensive collaborations with the School of Medicine, Moores Cancer Center, Jacobs School of Engineering, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute, Rady School of Management, Skaggs School of Pharmacy, and with other partners across the UC San Diego campus. Partnerships with the community and health agencies are fundamental to the School. The School is comprised of more than 125 primary faculty and academics, 25 secondary faculty, and 200 staff members and provides instruction and mentorship to 700 BSPH majors and 225 postgraduate students, and the School’s faculty and academics hold ~$125M total awarded grants and contracts.

The selected candidates will be responsible for research and/or practice, teaching, and service, commensurate with series of appointment and rank.

Candidates are required to show a demonstrated commitment to diversity and equity by submitting a Diversity Statement of past contributions and/or future plans in this area as part of their application for an academic appointment.

Candidates must have demonstrated experience in research in Public Health with peer-reviewed publications in reputable journals appropriate for appointment series, rank and step and/or demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate or graduate students in Public Health and/or demonstrated experience in the practice of public health.

Candidates must have a PhD, DrPH, or other doctoral degree focused in the area of Public Health or a related field by the time of start of the appointment

The posted UC Salary scales set the minimum pay at the appointment as determined by appointment type and if applicable, rank and/or step. The base pay range for this position is $86,500 - $297,200. Salary is negotiated annually. Additional compensation may be available if the position includes membership in the Health Sciences Compensation Plan. The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at UC San Diego (hwsph.ucsd.edu) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor rank faculty position in Health Equity with a research focus on African American communities and the Black Diaspora.

UC San Diego is forging a new paradigm for engagement and collaboration between STEM/Public Health/Health Sciences and the Social Sciences/Arts & Humanities. This faculty position is 1 of 13 Ladder Rank faculty positions that unite STEM/Public Health/Health Sciences departments and schools and Black Diaspora and African American Studies (BDAAS) through innovative research, coordinated teaching, and targeted service. Faculty will have multiple opportunities to engage with scholars across UC San Diego disciplines to address issues of race and racism, access and equity, and social and political influences focused on STEM/Public Health/Health Sciences, while also working within their home department/school and professional communities.

Faculty holding these positions will be expected to design and teach an undergraduate course that aligns with the Black Diaspora and African American Studies program, e.g., an appropriate Health Equity course, and conduct research focused on African American communities and the Black Diaspora. They may also demonstrate the equivalent through service to BDAAS and by mentoring undergraduate students. We seek candidates who will conduct research advancing health for African American communities and the Black Diaspora. We welcome candidates whose professional experiences and personal backgrounds have facilitated their understanding of traditionally underrepresented racial minority communities. Faculty are expected to have an inclusive stance on mentoring and advising that incorporates working with women and underrepresented racial minority undergraduate and graduate students. Faculty will be encouraged to engage in interdisciplinary conversations and scholarship across UC San Diego disciplines.

The selected candidates will be responsible for research, teaching, and service, commensurate with the series of appointment and rank, including research that focuses on African American communities and the Black Diaspora.

Appointment will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank and will be based on the candidate’s background and experience. The series will be 1.0 FTE Ladder Rank (Tenure-Track or Tenured).

Assistant Professor (Tenure-track):

Candidates must have demonstrated experience in teaching undergraduate or graduate courses in public health disciplines, which may be at the Teaching Assistant level for applicants who have not held a faculty position previously. Candidates must also have research experience related to factors of race/ethnicity and health. Candidates must have strong publications appropriate for the Assistant rank level of appointment.

Candidates must have a PhD, DrPH, or related doctoral degree by the time of the start of the appointment.

Candidates with previous experiences teaching, mentoring, and supporting the advancement of underrepresented racial minority students and a record of service activities that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion and whose research, teaching, and service advance anti-racism, anti-oppression, equity, and justice in Public Health are preferred. Candidates with experience in community-based research are also preferred. Candidates with experience in mentoring public health undergraduate or graduate students are also preferred.

Candidates with current extramural funding are also preferred.

Associate Professor (Tenured):

Candidates must have a PhD, DrPh, or related doctoral degree. Candidates must have demonstrated experience in teaching undergraduate or graduate courses in public health disciplines. Candidates must have current extramural funding, strong publications appropriate for the Associate rank level of appointment, and research and publication independence.

Appointees must comply with School and University instructions, deadlines, and policies regarding course scheduling, and are expected to be flexible with regard to the scheduling of their classes to accommodate the limited space availability for classrooms during standard business hours. Classes may be in person, online, or mixed. Appointments may be part or full-time, for 1, 2, or 3 classes per quarter and 1, 2, or 3 quarters in duration in an academic year. In the application, please specify the courses or academic area(s) in which you are qualified to teach. We are especially interested in recruiting candidates committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and who will make a strong and meaningful contribution to the development of a campus climate that supports that commitment.

Candidates must be in the process of obtaining or have obtained an advanced terminal degree in a program related to public health.

Candidates must have a PhD, DrPh, other related doctoral degree, or other related terminal degree (e.g. MPH, RD) by the start date of appointment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Candidates with research or practice experience relevant to the course(s) to which they are applying to teach and/or prior college-level teaching experience are preferred; experience can be as a teaching assistant.

A reasonable salary range estimate for this position is $66,259 - $86,453.
